April 19, 2013 - BOCH

April 19, 2013 - Day 13

I'm home today and attempting to get back into work. Brian and I decided that it's harder for us to be home - away from Bella & the hospital - and see signs of healthy Bella everywhere. But Faith & Brody need us so badly too.
Bella was jus...t told that she is going home this weekend and she is SO excited! She'll go back daily for intensive outpatient therapy starting Monday. I wish I'd been there to see her face and celebrate with her. Since I wasn't, she sent me this picture.

Bella's action shots from today

Bella just received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. I had asked for the priest to visit Bella and bring the Eucharist but I was a bit taken aback when he offered to give her that sacrament. I have only heard of it occurring on a deathbed but I guess it can apply to serious illness as well. The priest (Fr Austin) was really cool. I'm glad I was here to experience this with Bella.

Bella had a great day today mostly because SHE IS GOING HOME TOMORROW!!! We are all so excited that we are finally going to be together again!
It was really hard for me not to be with Bella today (though I'm with her at the hospital tonight) but Brian did a good job of keeping me updated. Bella started her day with speech therapy. I think this was her last ST session. The vocal strength that she h...ad lost seems to have returned already.
She had an hour straight of PT. she walked 10 feet with the walker and a little assistance. She did that 3 times. She sat on an exercise ball and reached for bean bags. Bella also practiced standing up with the walker and throwing bean bags. That's a huge challenge for her strength and balance. She was able to stand up with only the walker (no other assistance) for the first time today! She insisted the PT not hold on to her. After a few attempts, she did fall but it didn't keep her down for too long.
With OT today, Bella stood at a raised (waist-high) mat and played a game. Her balance is improving daily but she does still tire out very easily.
Bella's wheelchair, walker, and shower bench were delivered to the hospital today. I had thought we would just borrow or rent these things but I guess insurance covered them fully. I look forward to the day when I can donate them to someone else in need!
Tomorrow morning Bella has 2 therapy sessions and then I believe we get to go home!
